If you savvy is hard to start (you need to turn the key a few times to get it to start, especially in the morning after the car has been sitting overnight) it is likely the Crankshaft Position Sensor that talks to the cars Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has worn out. My Savvy was hard to start for a week. The service centre checked the car and replaced the battery and said all was fine. The next day it was still hard to start. A couple of days later the orange check engine light came on and would not go out.

The car was taken back to the service centre. When diagnosing the problem the ECU reported Fault Code 017 'Absent Tooth Signal' from crankshaft position sensor. The service centre removed and replaced the crankshaft position sensor and shunt harness. Deleted fault code, re-tested and all ok. The car now starts first time without a problem. Total cost of repair $651.85

Sensor $181.96
Cable, Shunt $320.63
Labour $90
GST $59.26
Total $651.85

My savvy is 4 years old and has traveled only 44,000km. Proton are replacing the sensor with an all new design as this seems to be a common problem. It is a shame the savvy has a long list of defects and quality issues.

the problem is actaully not with the sensor.. the real problem is from the connector.. what we do here is we just remove the connector (cut it out) and solder the wires right onto the sensor... and voila!~

Hello all fellow savvy owners i have got on to a good source for crankshaft position sensors!! Don't Pay $180 Australian Dollars or equivilent in other currencies i have x20 brand new sensors in stock for sale for only $44.00 each! I can post it internationally also with DHL or international mail services to your postal address. Do the job your self will only take 20 minutes there is only 2x 10mm bolts holing the sensor in near the top of the gearbox.
